An Island New Year 2018

Catherine’s monitor screen lights up.

DARQ:  Hi and Happy New Year’s Day. I’m still on the island and still enjoying the warmth of the sand beneath my feet. And, yes, Catherine, before you have apoplexy, I shucked my velvet slipper-shoes to enjoy a dawn walk on my little stretch of beach.

CATHERINE: So you celebrated all night?

DARQ: Yes, and it was a marvelous party with fireworks, food, and all sorts of libations available at three different bars around and in the swimming pools . . . Just a warm, peaceful, wonderful way to begin a new year of being on your planet Earth.

CATHERINE: And the dress? What about your dress?

DARQ: You did a great job. The gown was all I had envisioned from the sketch I gave you out of that Erte fashion book.

CATHERINE: I know what the sketch looked like, what I want to see is you wearing the thing!

DARQ: Okay. Ta-dah!

CATHERINE: Wow!  With your hair down and that flower accenting your tresses, you look lovely!

(A loud yawn ensues from Darq), then she says:  I’m going to head on in and catch a few Z’s. All too soon I have to leave this paradise. You can expect me at the farm by week’s end.

CATHERINE: We’ve got snow here, about 6″ but the temps are going to be single digits for the coming week with below zero wind chills. Bundle up  and dress warm.

DARQ: Hmm. Maybe I can wheedle a few more days out of this island stay.

CATHERINE: Coward. You can’t overstay your welcome no matter how warm the tropics are!

DARQ chuckles, then says: So true. I’ll see you soon. Enjoy your New Year’s Day!

(The connection ends.)

To one and all who visit this blog, Darq and I wish you

A Very Happy New Year’s Day and wonderful 2018!

Catherine E. McLean

Darq will return for Valentine’s Day wearing a new outfit. Be sure to visit.

****Note to Sewers and Crafters – Darq’s outfit is a sparkling velvet fabric that is lined with a shimmering silver-gray satin. This is the first time I’ve used a backdrop twice, but I liked my sister’s handiwork with the frosting for the palms. It’s very cold  here in Western Pennsylvania and 6″ of snow on the ground. Besides, when I look at this tropical setting, I feel warmer and thinking about Spring.

2017 – The New Year!

Darq here – as you can see, the gown Catherine made for me is sensational. It’s this rich, fire-orange-red velour with a glitter netting vest of eight layers with an enormous train.  Here’s the back view –

img_5673-use-backviewThe train’s eight tiers are alternating between pink and black netting. There are seven flowing “chains” that are incrediably lightweight. As you can see, there are “jewels” dangling from two of the upper, shorter chains. Here’s a frontal view of the dress and the vest –

and, of course, there are the shoes!

All in all, I had a very nice New Year’s eve party and will soon be back at the farm. Then it will be off to England where I’ll be interviewed by a witch and baking Fruity Cake for her orphans.

I wish you and yours a peaceful, joyful, and happy New Year!

and me, Catherine E. McLean, author of JEWELS OF THE SKY, a sci-fi adventure novel where two weeks after the book debuted, I found a doll that looked just like Darq, the story’s starfighter pilot and heroine. The story is  about –

Survival or extinction?

Mercy or miracle?

One woman’s choice.

Being a direct descendant of the captain who massacred the Mayans, Darq is a Wysotti woman and a duty-oriented, pragmatic interstellar fighter pilot. She doesn’t believe in miracles or forgiveness, or that J’Hi-inti (god) would ever rescind the death curse on her people for what happened to the Mayans. Only J’Hi-inti hears one compelling plea for reconciliation and decides to let chaos rule— and test Darq. After all, she’s a wild card like her nefarious ancestor. What will she do when she faces the ruthless alien fleet commander who spearheads the blitzkrieg that is to finally destroy her homeworld, and who she once witnessed murder her cadet comrades?  Blinded by hate and survivor guilt, all that stands between survival and extinction, heaven or hell, for Darq and her people is mercy— or a miracle.

Darq and New Years

CATHERINE:  Darq is gone. At 0530 hours–that being 5:30 a.m. EST., and a ridiculous time to wake anyone, “the suits” arrived in a black-glassed vehicle with four-wheel drive, and none too thrilled with the snow. They had wanted to use a helicopter and land in the pasture behind the house, but the snow was too deep. The four men (bundled in parkas suitable for Antarctica) came to pick up Darq.  She was packed and ready to go.  The suits and Darq left at 5:45.  Destination? An undisclosed airfield where Darq will board a private jet to an undisclosed location where she’s to attend a New Year’s Eve party. Leave it to the government for the cloak-and-dagger secrecy stuff.  All I was told is that Darq will be back sometime tomorrow afternoon.  However, Darq promised that if she could get cell phone access, she would contact me (so I wouldn’t worry about her).  She can’t text us because my husband and I live in a dead zone. Of course, “no news is good news” is my motto, so I assume all goes well for her.  As for me and my husband, it’ll be a quite New Year’s eve. Just us.  No partying.  Not that we are party types to begin with . . .  Oddly enough, the house seems way too quite with Darq gone. I think I’ll just go check my e-mails . . .

Darq NewYrEve-01E-Mail from Darq, 8:00 p.m. EST:   Adovee, Catherine!  I borrowed something called an iPad tablet to send you this picture of me in my “McLean” original (thank you so much for sewing it for me!).  Everyone, and I mean everyone, has complimented me on the dress (especially how the stripes match in points down the front seam).  As you can see, I was given a hat and a “horn” and a balloon. Things actually began about 1730 hours with hors d’oeuvres– and some interesting liquors.  One had a worm at the bottom of the glass.  I swallowed the worm whole.  Everyone seemed pleased with that. Personally, rye whiskey comes close to being the Wysotti equivalent of ek-musa, and I prefer that “over the rocks” (rocks being ice). Anyway, the dinner was beyond lavish. There was one meat–something called fillet mignon–or something like that–which was very good. I’m having a great time–  Got to go, the general says he’s ready to teach me how to do a “slow dance.”

E-Mail from Darq, 11:58 p.m. EST:  Adovee, again Catherine! I’m having a fantastic time.  I and everyone is now looking out the wall of glass windows, down at Times Square. We’re all waiting for the ball to drop. There it goes . . .

Four, three, two, one!    HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Darq NewYrEve-02
Five minutes later:  Yoi, Catherine, no one warned me about confetti. It’s everywhere.  Shitfire, I have confetti in my bra!  Double shitfire–no one warned me about all the kissing and auld langsyne either.  You Americans sure have strange customs.

******Special notice: January 9, 2013, Darq is going to be interviewed in Mexico by “Father Dragon”–to keep abreast of Darq’s activities, join us at Twitter
